In-between our regular travels, my husband and I have decided to explore our wonderful state of Arizona a little further and start hitting more national parks and historic, beautiful places through day trips and weekend get-a-ways. We have lived in Arizona for almost 22 years and we can't believe how many places exist that we haven't seen yet. So over the next two years we will be trying to visit as many as we can!
This past month we visited Prescott, AZ. We have drove pass it heading to other destinations plenty of times, but never stopped to see this quaint historic town. First, it is more updated than what I expected. I actually expected it to look like the old west like Goldfield Ghost Town in Apache Junction, AZ near the Superstition Mountains, but it is very metropolitan. With the regular popular stores and restaurants. But when you actually get into the downtown area, you are greeted with hints of the old west and the historic charm I was hoping to see, but with an updated flair. It was really a pleasure and delight talking with the local shop owners and enjoying some delicious food at the historic restaurant called "The Palace". A old saloon with a lot of charm, history and oh yeah... if you visit, ask to see the bullet holes from the gun fights. Don't forget to buy a souvenir glass as well! We also saw the courthouse, historic homes and Museums on whiskey Row.
One of the places we were dying to see, was Watson Lake. How did we not know this place existed after living in Arizona for 21 - 1/2 years? it is amazingly breathtaking! The unique lake is surrounded by a huge conglomerate of golden boulders. The lake is covered in green moss where people partook in kayaking; we got there too late to kayak. It is one of the most tranquil, scenic places we have ever visited. There are hiking trails that lead you around the lake, but due to time we did a short 1 - 1/2 hour hike and then headed home. Bu,t we seen enough to be mesmerized by its enchanting beauty! If you are visiting Arizona, you should stop in Prescott and spend a few hours in this beautiful town and visit Watson Lake or visit for a weekend get-a-way. It is worth the 2.25 hour drive from Mesa, AZ. Enjoy the beautiful pictures and get out and explore your state and beyond! :)
